Agarwood is often encountered as incense, oil or collectible wood, but its story begins with a living Aquilaria tree. This guided class takes participants beyond the finished material to understand the biology, biodiversity and natural processes behind one of Malaysia’s most remarkable aromatic resources.
Participants are introduced to Malaysian Aquilaria, the fundamentals of agarwood formation, resin characteristics and the relationship between the tree, its environment and the aromatic material we eventually recognise as agarwood.
The experience progresses from classroom learning to direct observation in the field. Participants first build a foundation in agarwood knowledge before encountering the tree itself at a preserved agarwood site — connecting what they have learned with the forest, environment and living biological resource behind Malaysian agarwood.
By the end of the experience, participants will understand agarwood from a perspective that cannot be gained through finished products alone — beginning with the living Aquilaria tree and progressing through resin formation, agarwood characteristics, human use and conservation.
The preserved agarwood site transforms classroom knowledge into direct experience, allowing participants to observe the trees, surrounding environment and conservation efforts firsthand while developing a deeper understanding of the responsibility involved in protecting Malaysia’s agarwood heritage.
