Agarwood research

understanding agarwood through science.

Agarwood is shaped by a complex interaction between the tree, its environment, biological processes and resin formation. Understanding these relationships is essential to advancing knowledge of Malaysian agarwood.

The Malaysia Artistic Agarwood Association (MAAA) aims to encourage research into Malaysia’s native Aquilaria resources, with particular interest in biodiversity, resin characteristics, aromatic profiles and agarwood identification.

As our research initiatives develop, we seek to connect traditional agarwood knowledge with scientific investigation — creating opportunities for collaboration between researchers, universities, institutions and industry practitioners.

ABOUT OUR RESEARCH

Malaysia is home to native Aquilaria resources that form an important part of the country’s forest biodiversity and agarwood heritage. Yet many questions surrounding resin formation, aromatic variation, geographical origin and biological diversity continue to offer opportunities for deeper scientific investigation.

The Malaysia Artistic Agarwood Association seeks to support a research environment where scientific methods can meet field experience and traditional knowledge. Our long-term direction is to contribute towards a stronger evidence-based understanding of Malaysian agarwood and its responsible conservation.
